Barbados Youth Business Trust and its supported youth business,
Caribbean E-Waste Management operated by Ms. Malikca Cummings, and several of
its partners, including other youth businesses, CERMES, Barbados Chamber of
Commerce, Caribbean Youth Environmental Network and Future Centre Trust will
participate in a Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) training to mark WED.
WED is a day that
stimulates awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and
public action. The first WED was June 05th, 1973, after
the United Nations conference on the human environment, which was held June 5-16, 1972.
This year's theme is Many Species, One Planet, One Future. This year's global host Rwanda, a country
of exceptional biodiversity which has taken significant actions on
environmental protection, will lead the celebrations with three days of keynote
events.
BYBT and its partners join
thousands of activities around the globe with the hosting of this POPs training.
Other global activities include beach
clean ups, concerts, exhibitions, film festivals, rallies, competitions, tree
planting, water conservation and energy conservation workshops.
This is a
certification training workshop entitled "Achieving Basic Knowledge and
Awareness in Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs)".
The training will be held
on June 4th from 9:00am to 4:00pm, on the eve of World Environment
Day, in the DIT Computer Lab and will be facilitated
by officers of the GEF SGP and UNDP.
BYBT and Caribbean E-Waste Management are currently engaged
in a POPs awareness, one year project, funded by the GEF SGP which is
implemented by UNDP as a corporate programme of the GEF on behalf of the three
GEF Implementing Agencies of the World Bank, United Nations Environment
Programme (UNEP) and the UNDP. The
project is scheduled to end in December 2010.
Released
June, 2010.
